Numbers lesson for May and Corbyn

The “other available options” – whatever those may be – have not disappeared. But it’s likely that when a Labour backbench plan to force another vote emerges – for example, if a proposal from MPs Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson comes up for a vote – Jeremy Corbyn will come under huge pressure to swing behind it. And one key member of the shadow cabinet tonight predicted that will be the way the party chooses to proceed. Although the Shadow Chancellor implied the leadership itself could put the plan forward, John McDonnell said: “When the meaningful vote comes back, and we’re told maybe that will be 12 March – there are rumours it could be next week – that’s the …

It comes as the UK broke the record for the warmest winter day for a second time. Five crews and two specialist moorland firefighting units will remain at the scene overnight. Researchers Entangle Photons Of Different Colors In Quantum Computing Breakthrough

Applying the laws of quantum mechanics to computing has the potential to solve problems we wouldn’t even know how to tackle with current devices, but before we can get there, there are several hurdles to overcome. Now, researchers seem to have found a solution to a particularly thorny issue. Getting information out of quantum systems is usually done with visible light photons. Telecommunication via fiber optics uses infrared photons. The question is how to connect the two without losing important information. The team was able to construct a chip-based optical device that, for the first time, can entangle photons of different wavelengths. The findings are published in Nature Physics. Entanglement is a curious quantum mechanical property where two (or more) particles can …

Stuffed bear goes on fun adventure at state park after 5-year-old boy accidentally leaves it behind

Once the family returned home to Columbia, S.C., and noticed the stuffed animal’s disappearance, they called the park to see if the bear was there – it was. 103-YEAR-OLD WOMAN BECOMES OLDEST NATIONAL PARK JUNIOR RANGER Park rangers agreed to send the teddy bear back to Thompson, but first, they outfitted the forgotten toy in a ranger hat and took it on an excursion around the park, Myrtle Beach Online reported. Once the bear was returned the little boy renamed it “Mr. Junior Ranger Bear.” (Courtesy of Myrtle Beach State Park) Thompson was reportedly thrilled with the photos and named his bear Mr. Junior Ranger Bear. “When he saw the photos, he said, ‘bear went fishing,’” Thompson’s dad, Greg McDaniel, said to Myrtle …

In Nigeria vote, armed vigilantes work to keep the peace

YOLA, Nigeria – One by one the uniformed men carrying crude weapons and wearing traditional amulets materialized on the dark street in the northern Nigerian city of Yola. Then, after midnight, their commander issued orders and the 30 men dispersed on foot to set up roadblocks and flag down vehicles. They shone flashlights at frightened drivers who squirmed to show identification papers. When the operation was over, two hours later, at least five suspicious men were detained and later turned over to the police. These civilian volunteers — a motley crew that includes carpenters, metal workers, teachers and even some students — call themselves the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, hunters of Islamic extremists and other bandits who have turned parts …

What’s Really Happening With The “Ice Tsunami” Forcing Lake Erie Residents To Evacuate?

Strong winds have forced a massive wall of ice worthy of a Game of Thrones shout-out against coastal buildings, prompting emergency services to issue a voluntary evacuation in a small New York town. A now-viral dramatic video of the “ice tsunami” shared by the Niagara Parks Police perked the ears of weather enthusiasts around the globe as it captures the rapid movement of ice chunks making landfall and piling into the roadway. More commonly known as ice shoves, these blockades occur when strong winds rapidly push free-floating ice toward shore, resulting in dangerous pile-ups once they make landfall. This was the case over the weekend along Lake Erie in upstate New York, where residents saw sustained hurricane-strength winds of more than 113 …

Transgender student athletes in South Dakota could face this restriction

(CNN)A bill is making its way through the South Dakota legislature that could prevent transgender students from playing on high school sports teams based on their gender identity. Supporters say HB 1225 is about ensuring fairness for girls in particular, who might face unfair competition from students who were assigned male at birth but now identify as female. Opponents call the proposal an attempt to “codify” discrimination against transgender teens and undermine the authority of the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA), the group that enacted the current policy letting students play on sex-segregated sports teams based on their gender identity. “No one is harmed by allowing transgender people to compete consistent with who they are. House Bill 1225 …

A Documentary About Menstruation Won At The 2019 Oscars

For the first time ever, a documentary about women’s periods has taken home an Oscar and, considering literally half of the global population will at some point in their lifetime experience a period, it should come as no surprise that menstruation sees normalization in 2019, amirite? The 26-minute Netflix flick details what happens in a rural village outside of Delhi, India, when a sanitation pad machine is made accessible to women and young girls who might otherwise skip or drop out of school because of menstruation stigma and a lack of access to feminine hygiene products. Here, the women learn to make and market their pads. “I’m not crying because I’m on my period or anything,” said director Rayka Zehtabchi …

Pence will meet with Venezuelan opposition leader in Colombia after violent weekend

(CNN)US Vice President Mike Pence will meet with Venezuela’s self-declared interim president and opposition leader, Juan Guaido in Bogota, Colombia Monday, following a weekend of violent clashes along Venezuela’s borders with Colombia and Brazil. US response: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned the actions of Maduro’s government and said the US would “take action against those who oppose the peaceful restoration of democracy in Venezuela.” Pompeo wrote on Twitter: “What kind of a sick tyrant stops food from getting to hungry people? The images of burning trucks filled with aid are sickening.” Tensions with Colombia: Maduro on Saturday told supporters he was breaking all diplomatic relations with Colombia and calling for its ambassadors and consuls to leave Venezuela. New Zealand’s Mystery Giant Bird Had Tiny African Relatives

Until humans arrived 750 years ago, New Zealand was a paradise for birds. Facing almost no competition or predation from mammals some of them took a deeply eccentric turn. The adzebill evolved such an odd body that, hundreds of years after it went extinct, ornithologists have struggled to work out how it lived, and identify its nearest relatives. Dr Kieren Mitchell of Adelaide University has helped solve its family tree, but admits to being stumped on the first question. There is really nothing else like it that we know of today, so it’s hard to make comparisons. Mitchell is co-author of a paper in Diversity showing the adzebill’s nearest living relatives are Madagascan birds barely 1000th of its weight. This opens …

“Dog” Rescued From Freezing River Is Actually A Wolf

There seem to be plenty of examples of mistaken identities in the animal kingdom. There was that man who was shocked to find his adorable fluffy “puppies” were, in fact, Asiatic black bears. (A gaffe that appears to be more common than you might think.) And then, there was the woman whose “Belgium Shepherds” turned out to be a pack of wild jackals. The latest “imposter” is a Eurasian wolf masquerading as a doggo, as reported by Estonian news site Postimees. The poor creature was found cold and stuck in a frigid river north of Pärnu, a resort city in southwestern Estonia, by a group of constructors working on the Sindi dam.  The men managed to clear a path through the ice …
