18-Tentacled Sea Creature From 500 Million Years Ago Evolved Into Animal Still Drifting Todays Oceans

As if dreamed up by Jules Verne himself, a new creature described only by its fossilized remains is lending a new perspective to the ordering of the Tree of Life. What are now rice fields and farmlands in China’s Yunnan Province, half a billion years ago once made up the seafloor – home to mysterious and monstrous creatures like the Daihua sangiong that attached itself to the seafloor and had 18 feathery, prey-capturing tentacles around its mouth. According to research published in Current Biology, the animal could be an ancient cousin that set the stage for one of the world’s most radiant sea-dwelling creatures: ctenophores. All living creatures evolved from a single common ancestor, study author Jakob Vinther told IFLScience, adding that studying fossils …

Is 2019 The Year Of The Scam? Betches

We’re mere months into 2019, and already this year is shaping up to be messier than my IG stories after 12am. If you haven’t been paying attention, then I’m of course referring to the unprecedented amount of scam scandals that have fed my will to live the media cycle over the past few months. First, the Fyre Festival documentaries dropped, and I’ve never felt more alive than I did watching a bunch of rich millennials resort to looting and petty thievery for a roll of toilet paper. Then Aunt Becky got caught bribing colleges because her daughter wanted to go to frat parties at USC, and now HBO just dropped a new documentary about disgraced CEO/Silicon Valley “It Girl” Elizabeth …

Who is William Barr?

(CNN)Attorney General William Barr, about a month after starting his second stint atop the Justice Department, issued a letter to lawmakers Sunday offering his summary of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Justice Department veterans celebrated President Donald Trump’s choice of Barr in December to take over the job as attorney general on a permanent basis after his dismissal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions a month earlier. At the time, Barr was a former attorney general under President George H.W. Bush who worked his way up from a night school law student through the ranks of the Justice Department, which he helmed decades ago. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was said to be “elated” by the choice of Barr and Sessions …

Kamala Harris calls for federal investment to raise teachers’ salaries

Washington (CNN)Sen. Kamala Harris called Saturday for allocating a large federal investment to improve teacher salaries nationwide. “And people are going to say, you’re going to hear them say after today, ‘Well, how’s she gonna pay for it?’ Well, here’s the thing,” Harris said. “You understand that your analysis is not how much does it cost, the question is what’s the return on the investment. And on this, the investment will be our future.” Almost all Democrats — nearly 90% — said teachers are underpaid in an April 2018 poll by The Associated Press/NORC Center, compared with 78% of independents and a still-solid 66% majority of Republicans. Harris’ proposal also comes during an uptick of teachers’ strikes across the country. …

Coroners ‘could investigate stillbirths’

When a pregnancy that appeared to be healthy ends in stillbirth, the hospital caring for the mother will investigate. A safety investigation body funded by the Department of Health and Social Care may look into it too. While many parents are satisfied with existing processes, some have raised concerns about the inconsistency of investigations and have called for a more transparent and independent system. Under the proposed new system that ministers are consulting on: Coroners in England and Wales would have powers to investigate all full-term stillbirths, occurring from 37 weeks pregnancy They would not have to gain consent or permission from any third party in exercising this power The coroner would consider whether any lessons could be learned Their …

Apple Enters the Credit Card Market WithYepApple Card

Apple’s event Monday ended up featuring one piece of hardware after all: a new credit card, which it plans to launch this summer in the US. The aptly named Apple Card, created in partnership with Mastercard and Goldman Sachs, will live within the existing Wallet app on iPhones and as a traditional physical card. During a keynote speech, Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay, described the card as “bold and innovative,” even though it doesn’t offer many unique rewards or perks. But it does feature several security upgrades that may appeal to those especially concerned about privacy. Apple Card is ultimately a credit card, and as such, comes with recognizable cash-back perks, though with an Apple-specific twist: 2 …
