Will Growing Change Your Mind About Amy Schumer? Betches

If you’re on this website, you likely have a well-formed opinion on Amy Schumer. Over the past five years, Schumer has swung wildly in the court of public opinion. We loved Trainwreck—then we remembered some of her early jokes about Hispanics. We love how real she is on Instagram—but find her Twitter presence problematic. We love Amy Schumer the feminist, but as a white feminist, we’re still eager to see her overcome past blind spots. Schumer’s new comedy special, Growing, doesn’t quite feature a woman reborn, or cleansed of past imperfections. But it does, aptly, feature a Schumer who’s well on her way to growing up. The Schumer in this special—now both married and heavily pregnant—retains a lot of her …

30 People Share Their Worst Airbnb Experiences

AirBNB in Toronto. Sister and I brought our passports. They demanded we forfeit the passports on arrival. We said absolutely not and after hesitation were shown to our space. The rooms did not match the pictures posted at all. The place reeked of bleach that had been used recently. We took photos of every room, and quietly slipped out when no one was watching. Reported everything to AirBNB and were given a full refund. Their ad was removed and host blocked. Seriously believe we narrowly escaped being trafficked that day. We arrived at our AirB&B in Austin to find that the master bedroom had been quite literally blocked off by the pool table. We thought ”Eh, no biggie, they were …

Why did prosecutors drop all charges against Jussie Smollett?

(CNN)Police said investigators had more than enough evidence to convict actor Jussie Smollett but in an unexpected turn of events, prosecutors decided to drop all charges against him. Police in Chicago found several pieces of evidence that led them to believe that Smollett orchestrated the attack. Investigators had footage of the men involved in the alleged assault buying a ski mask, sunglasses and other items. They also had a check that Smollett used to pay one of them. But no surveillance cameras captured the incident and one of the men was actually Smollett’s personal trainer, the actor’s attorneys said. If prosecutors saw holes in their case, they had to do the “best they could do in the interest of justice.” …

The Number Of Invasive Species Threatening The Galpagos Islands Is Way Higher Than We Realized

The Galápagos Islands are facing invasions on multiple fronts, from plastic bags and microplastics to alien species. According to a study recently published in Aquatic Invasions, more than 50 non-native plants and animals have made their way into Galápagos waters. This is close to 10 times as many as previously thought – and even that might not be the whole story. The paper is the product of a study conducted by scientists at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Williams College, and the Charles Darwin Foundation, who collected field surveys on Santa Cruz and Baltra (two of the larger Galápagos islands). Here, they gathered samples from mangrove roots, floating docks, and general debris and took note of any species that grew on the settlement plates they hung from docks 1 meter …

A transgender student was told he couldn’t run for prom king. He fought back and won something better.

A Georgia high school has adapted gender-neutral prom court terminology, after receiving public backlash for telling a student he could only run for prom queen because he was born a woman. Dex Frier, who has identified as transgender since his sophomore year at Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia, was seriously ecstatic when he received one of six coveted nominations for senior prom king, an honor he was beyond excited about. “I was jumping up and down. Me and my best friend were losing our minds, we were so excited,” Frier told CBS affiliate WGCL. However, school officials told him that because he was assigned female at birth, he could only run for prom queen. He — along with his …

Mastercard Wades Into Murky Waters With Its New Digital ID

In December, Mastercard announced that it was working to develop an international digital identity scheme which could be used as a flexible verifier for financial transactions, government interactions, or online services. The idea of a secure, decentralized, universal ID has become a sort of holy grail in the age of rapid digital interactions and rampant identity fraud. Mastercard's initial announcement was met with some skepticism from privacy-minded observers. Now, the company is releasing more details in a new 24-page report on how its platform will be set up and what the tool will offer. But you still can't try it yet. Mastercard envisions a platform in which consumers have control of their identity information and it is stored locally on …

Tica, Mozambique (CNN)It has been nearly two weeks since Tropical Cyclone Idai ripped through Mozambique, razing buildings and submerging entire towns and villages — but even now the human toll is yet to be fully understood. More than half a million people have been affected in the country and at least 110,000 have sought refuge in camps. Meanwhile, the humanitarian efforts to reach those trapped continue but collapsed roads are hampering progress. With no other option, some people are using rudimentary canoes to cross the flooded plains while others are trudging across higher ground to safe havens several hours walk away. One eyewitness told CNN that in areas where flood waters were still high, people were joining hands to form …

The Real Choice You Make When You Subscribe to Apple Services

If there’s anything that’s clear from Apple’s event Monday, it’s that the maker of premium tech products is trying to sell people on its vision for the future of services—a seemingly effortless lifestyle filled with always-accessible media, exclusive videogames, and cash-back incentives from a literal titanium credit card. If there’s anything that’s not clear from the Apple event, it’s pretty much everything else. Apple’s pitch for the new era of subscription services was scant on some key details, including the pricing and ship dates of some of its new products. Company executives spoke confidently about services that aren’t launching for months; actors and directors pitched shows that had been greenlit and shot, but little footage was shown. That long lead …
